Haibo Dong

Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Dr. Haibo Dong is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Virginia, where he also serves as Director of Graduate Programs.

Full Bio

He previously served as Director of the Aerospace Engineering Program from 2021 to 2024. Before joining UVA, he held a faculty position at Wright State University. He received his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Dong’s research spans computational fluid dynamics, fluid-structure interaction, low-speed aerodynamics and hydrodynamics, and digital twins of bio-inspired systems. His work seeks to understand and model complex flows in biological and engineered systems.

He is an ASME Fellow, an AIAA Associate Fellow, and serves on the Executive Committee of the ASME Fluids Engineering Division, where he chairs the Honors and Awards Committee. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Micro Air Vehicles from 2017 to 2025 and as an Associate Editor of the AIAA Journal from 2018 to 2022. His honors include the NSF CAREER Award, the AIAA Foundation Abe Zarem Educator Award, and the ASME Fluids Engineering Division Lewis F. Moody Award.
